Unity of Bandon June 18 weekly update:
Dear Friends,
Last Sunday, the Board met and reviewed recommendations from the CDC, various church organizations, and most importantly recommendations from our church liability insurance company. Maintaining the recommended physical distancing in a sanctuary of our size means that only 13 people (which includes minister and support staff) could safely attend services on any given Sunday. In addition, there are many protocols and procedures that would need to be in place a detailed list was sent out yesterday.

It was determined that we will not be reopening Unity of Bandon for the foreseeable future. Does that mean we won’t open until late summer? Fall? Winter? Next year?? Honestly, we don’t know. While we all desire to resume regular activities, the safety of our congregation, most of whom are in high-risk groups, is of the utmost importance. Be assured as conditions change, we will reassess our decision.

The entire Board is very clear that this is the right path to take at this time and I know this is the right decision for our community. Am I disappointed? Yes! Do I want it to be different? Yes! Do I miss everyone? YES! I must admit, that each time we have discussed the possibility of meeting in person, I thought, “well, it’s just for another few weeks, maybe a month…” This time – after three months of being online only – it really sunk in that reopening isn’t going to happen in the next few weeks. Yes, I am slow to accept some things!

I find myself feeling grief for all that we have missed experiencing together – the Easter flowers, Earth Day, singing and celebrating and the many other ordinary and extraordinary moments of connection. I long to be with you all as we witness the chaos and transformation happening in our world so we can discuss, wonder, comfort one another, laugh and cry together. It’s not the same speaking to my iphone’s camera in an empty room – and no one laughs at my jokes! Seriously, your presence and energy are what helps co-create our Sunday experiences.

I’m not one who believes that everything happens for a reason, but I do believe that we can bring reason to everything that happens. This is a time of deep healing individually and as a human family. Things are breaking open, breaking through, coming forth into the light. Our entire world is transforming and that kind of shift isn’t pretty or comfortable. Now is the time when the rubber hits the road. What are the spiritual principles that will guide my thoughts and how will I convert these ideas into the words I speak, the actions I take, the things I build, the way my very being moves into expression? And isn’t that what life is all about?

I know it’s hard to be separated but I also know deep in my soul that we are truly connected in heart and spirit! We will persevere. Remember our vision: We are God’s Love in action, dedicated to a life of love and a love of life.
To quote Karen Drucker, I hold you in my heart. You are my family. You are the face of God.

With Love,
Reverend Robin
